"Enjoy Freely and Dive into Nature"

If you're looking to escape from everyday life and experience the extraordinary in nature, Shiobara, with its minimal human interference, is the perfect place. However, facing genuine wilderness might make you feel a bit intimidated. If you're not accustomed to outdoor activities, you might even consider giving up. For those willing to step beyond their usual comfort zone, it's highly recommended to seek the assistance of a local guide who knows the area's natural environment inside out.

"Our guides prioritize participants' safety and tailor activities to each person's outdoor experience level. You can rest assured because I'm here to ensure everything goes smoothly!"

So says Tsugimi KIMIJIMA, a tour guide who moved from downtown Osaka and has been involved in expanding outdoor activity areas and services. She was amazed by the rich natural environment of Nasu Shiobara when she moved here 26 years ago, following her marriage to a partner working as a ski instructor.

"Although easily accessible from Tokyo, the area retains much of its untouched nature, with a full range of natural features such as lakes and valleys nestled in the mountains. Locals used to venture out of the city to enjoy nature, but we wondered if we could create a place where people could enjoy these natural wonders closer to home. It took some time to get permission from the city, but in recent years, our persistent efforts have started to gain attention, and the areas available for use have been gradually expanding."

Among the tours offered by Tsugimi KIMIJIMA, the "Momijidani Valley Great Suspension Bridge" is a particularly popular viewpoint. Here, you can enjoy canoeing in a spot not visible from the road, offering a scene reminiscent of a hidden paradise. On days with little wind and high water levels, some visitors make multiple trips to catch a glimpse of the Ryushun Falls deep in the valley. Due to the inherent risks of such pristine nature, entry without a guide is prohibited. Tsugimi KIMIJIMA believes in the significance of providing outdoor activities, as they offer unique experiences that allow people to gain new insights and take away valuable memories.

"Having grown up in the city, I was quite distant from nature during my childhood. As an adult, I came to realize the wonders of nature, and it became a valuable experience for me. I hope that children today can experience this at an earlier age. Playing in nature with others often leads to unexpected opportunities for leadership and requires different forms of communication compared to school. Engaging in extraordinary activities can be a catalyst for people to discover new things about themselves. What I want to convey to parents is not to place too many expectations on their children. Even if they don't achieve immediate results, they are definitely growing through the process. I believe that experiencing outdoor activities as a family can help them understand this better."

Through Satoyama Tours, Creating a Cycle of Mutual Benefit Between People and Nature

Unused mountain trails gradually transform into pathways for animals over the years. As animal habitats and human settlements begin to overlap, animals that descend into villages can become pests, often leading to their culling. The Aozora Project THE DAY is an organization dedicated to addressing such issues faced by satoyama (traditional rural landscapes) across Japan through outdoor activities. Yoichi KIMISHIMA, the representative, was born and raised in Shiobara and has been actively engaged in conveying the nature and history of Shiobara as a satoyama nature guide.

"The beauty of autumn foliage in Tochigi’s northern region is unparalleled, with lakes and rivers scattered throughout. What sets Shiobara apart is its tranquility, with fewer people around. If you prefer personalized support over generic experiences, there is no better place than Shiobara. We strive to provide exceptional guidance so that each visitor leaves with a sense of satisfaction and a desire to return."

Yoichi KIMISHIMA emphasizes that it is crucial for people to visit and engage in activities in Satoyama to maintain a positive relationship between nature and humans. Satoyama trekking involves walking along well-maintained trails using trekking poles. The presence of human activity in the mountains helps deter animals, encouraging them to return to their natural habitats.

"Avoiding small branches and rocks along the path and maintaining forest roads not only delineates the boundary between animals and humans but also contributes to safer enjoyment of activities like mountain biking. By preserving the natural environment, we also benefit from nature's blessings."

Yoichi KIMISHIMA, who aims to increase the number of "relationship-based residents" who frequently visit Shiobara, is also actively involved in promoting the overall charm of Shiobara, including its hot springs and local cuisine. One of his initiatives is the "THE DAY Passport," which provides free hot spring tickets to those who contribute to the preservation of Satoyama. Currently, there are about 40 members who maintain a relaxed connection with Shiobara and enjoy it in their own unique way, beyond the typical tourist experience.

"I believe that vibrant places attract energetic people who love nature. From my perspective as an outdoor guide, I want to help energize Shiobara’s future."
