Toteyaki, a local food of Shiobara

“Toteyaki” is a local food that originated in Shiohara.
Although it looks like a crepe, the exquisite thickness of the batter gives it a fluffy texture that’s almost like castella. The dough is made with milk and eggs from Nasu-Shiobara, which boasts the highest raw milk production in Honshu, and the fillings vary depending on the store. You can enjoy a total of 12 unique types of toteyaki in Shiobara Onsen town, from sweet varieties using fresh cream, fruit, and red bean paste, to savory varieties wrapped around soba noodles or sushi.
By the way, the “tote” in Tote-yaki comes from the “tote” in “tote horse-drawn carriage.” In the past, the trumpet-shaped horns used on horse-drawn carriages would make a “tote, tote tote tote” sound, hence the name “tote horse-drawn carriage.”
Toteyaki is a food item that was created with the shape of that trumpet in mind.Shiobara’s famous Tote horse-drawn carriage

Tote horse-drawn carriages, which have been used as a means of transportation in Shiobara since the mid-Meiji period, are still in operation today for tourist purposes.Tote-yaki and Tote-basha.
