Gensan Cave

The adjacent Weapons Museum displays armor and helmets discovered inside the cave.

Approximately 800 years ago, Minamoto no Aritsuna, a trusted retainer of Minamoto no Yoshitsune, was pursued by the forces of Minamoto no Yoritomo and fled from Kamakura, hiding out in this limestone cave. He was discovered and met a tragic end when rice water, which he had washed in the waterfall flowing inside the cave, spilled out of the cave. The limestone cave was formed by volcanic activity and is about 50m long. The temperature inside the cave averages 15-16°C throughout the year, making it cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
