那須疏水による開拓事業により開発が進められ、明治中頃の鉄道開通を機に、急速に黒磯が発展を始めました。 また町の東側にある鍋掛には、旧奥州街道が通り松尾芭蕉も奥の細道の道中訪れたとされる句碑が今なお残っています。町の西側にある東那須野（那須塩原）は、東北新幹線の開通により新しい街づくりとして、急成長を遂げております。
